As Uganda joins the rest of the world in the celebration of World AIDS Day, her celebration has been held under the local theme “National solidarity and a shared responsibility towards ending AIDS”.
This solidarity has enabled a great achievement significantly in the fight against HIV.
According to the Ministry of health Uganda, there has been a decline in new HIV infections from 100,000 in 2015 to 53,413 in 2019
Also, AIDS related deaths stood at 21,000 in 2019 compared to 65,000 in 2015.
On pregnant mothers, HIV Testing stands at 96% according to the current statistics from the Ministry of health Uganda.
Ministry also said the enrollment of HIV+ pregnant women as per now stands at 95%
Since 2011, it has also been noted that a total of 5.9 million men have been circumcised. Safe Male Circumcision is one of the preventive measures to reduce the risk of HIV infection.
Each year, World AIDS Day offers an opportunity for Ministry of health to reflect on the achievements made and challenges faced in the implementation of the HIV response.
